Maybe you’ve felt it too. This quiet, collective unraveling.

Comfort has left the building. Around me, friends and family members are losing jobs they once thought they'd retire in. Some are walking away from businesses they built from the ground up. Others are standing at the edge of endings they didn’t choose, squinting to make out what might come next.

There’s something sacred and terrifying about this kind of in-between space, when the old life no longer fits, but the new one hasn’t fully arrived.

And I know that space all too well.

In 2016, I was interviewing Devi Brown for the xoNecole series Living My Dream when she said something that would stay with me for years:

“A snake that cannot shed its skin will perish.”

At the time, I nodded, not realizing just how deeply that truth would show up in my own life. But as the years unfolded, and especially during one of the most uncomfortable transitions I’ve ever walked through, I came to understand exactly what she meant.

If we hold on too tightly to old versions of ourselves: old identities, titles, routines, relationships, or material things, we suffocate our own growth. What once protected us becomes too tight. What once fit no longer allows us to breathe. And if we don’t release it… we risk spiritually withering in a life that no longer aligns.

Shedding is scary. It requires discomfort, surrender, and faith. But it’s also necessary.

Because to become who you're called to be, you have to be willing to let go of who you were.

I don’t talk about this story a lot because there’s still a lot of shame I carry around that period of my life.

But in 2017, just two years after I walked away from my famous celebrity gossip blog, I sold and donated almost everything and showed up in NYC with a few suitcases and a little bit of cash left to my name. Cash I received after turning the car that once was a staple on my vision board over to Carmax.

At the time, it had been two years since I launched a new media platform, and though I had taken the leap with purpose and good intentions, the reality of what followed was heavy.

I had poured everything I had, emotionally, spiritually, and financially, into building xoNecole and although it was making it’s mark online, the truth is, the site wasn’t making money yet. It was taking us quite some time to put together a sales team who would go out and secure partnership deals, and we were also having a hard time convincing advertisers that our audience of mostly African-American women actually mattered. Over a series of months, I saw my savings deplete as I covered operational expenses out of pocket: paying writers, hosting fees, marketing… all while trying to keep up appearances and keep the dream afloat. And, I was completely drowning.

Although I loved my brand, I started to resent my brand.

There were nights I would lie awake wondering if I had made a mistake. Wondering if the people who said I was crazy for walking away from a successful blog to start a new brand were right. I thought about the articles that began to surface online “Necole Bitchie: From Boss to Broke.” The gofundme’s that people asked me if they could set up in my name. The humiliation of publicly transitioning while the world was watching.

I also thought about the years I was sacrificing. The years that could have gone to finding my purposemate and building a family. The nice home with the white picket fence. Coming home to smiling, toothless faces and toddler giggles, family dinners and presents under the Christmas tree.

But instead, I chose a life of family-less holidays spent trying to figure out how to scale a media platform, and wondering how I was going to meet the next payroll cycle.

It was lonely. It was exhausting. And for a while, I questioned everything.

Was the dream worth the detour?
Was purpose supposed to feel this painful?

I was living in Arizona at the time, a place I had moved to intentionally for peace and healing after the noise of my former life. And for a while, it delivered just that: long walks, stillness, and the space to feel what I hadn’t made time to feel before.

But God? Whew.
God was like, “You ain’t about to get too comfortable here, sis.”

Not when He had something greater for me. Not when I was still clinging to pieces of the woman He’d already asked me to outgrow.

The truth was: Arizona had been a cocoon. But I wasn’t meant to live there, I was meant to transform there.

And so I made the decision that it was time to make a move. To shed.
To go where the dream could stretch its legs, even if it meant starting from scratch.

Y’all, let me tell you something: That three-week period leading up to the move when I was selling my furniture, and all of the expensive bags, shoes, and clothes I had accumulated during a time when life was grand and money was no issue?

The most humbling experience of my life.

I remember walking through my place, picking through pieces of my former life, tagging things to sell, give away, or let go of. The designer heels I once wore front row at fashion shows? Gone. The custom furniture that once filled a “boss babe” spacious loft meant to impress guests? Had to go.

But the moment that really hit me was driving the SUV that once sat pretty on my vision board straight to Carmax… and watching them write me a small check as I handed over the keys and the car.

I won’t lie to you. That drive felt like a funeral.

Because it wasn’t just about the car, it was about the version of me that car represented. The girl who thought material things meant she had made it. The woman who once measured success by what she drove, what she wore, and who knew her name.

I wasn’t just selling things, I was shedding ego, identity, and a life that no longer served me.

And even though I knew it was necessary, it still hurt.
Growth always does.

So I show up in New York.

I had found a $600 room for rent in Harlem that was just a few square feet bigger than a walk-in closet. No exaggeration. I could stretch my arms out and almost touch both walls.

The apartment was shared with a rotating cast: three roommates at a time, give or take, all of them chasing dreams of their own. Aspiring actors. Cruise ship performers. Models fresh off the Greyhound from somewhere in the Midwest. We all shared one bathroom.

That summer of 2017 was wild.

I had laid off all of the writers for xoNecole by then and we were surviving on recycled evergreen content, trying to make it look fresh while I prayed no one noticed the lights were dimming behind the scenes.

The site looked alive, but I was barely holding on.

My only glimmer of hope was that I was deep in negotiations with a big Hollywood producer. He had taken interest in acquiring xoNecole and adding it to his portfolio of media properties, which included blockbuster films like “Girls Trip” and “Think Like A Man.”

It felt surreal. Like, how am I over here splitting a bathroom with strangers… and also negotiating a potential acquisition with one of the biggest names in Black Hollywood?

That was the duality of my life at the time:
Public progress. Private purgatory.

The thing about it is: No one really knew about this time in my life.
Not even my close friends.

I was too embarrassed. Too proud. Too afraid to admit how hard it had gotten.

During that time, one of my friends also got engaged. I was happy for her and truly meant it.

But later that night, I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the walls of that Harlem apartment, and quietly mourned the life I thought I’d have by now.

It was a reminder of everything I had given up: love, stability, security, for a dream I wasn’t even sure would ever work.

And when you’re in the middle of that kind of sacrifice, with no accolades, no applause, and no proof that it’s going to pay off, it’s hard not to feel like maybe you chose wrong.

Meanwhile, a few months later, our negotiations hit a roadblock and I decided to call everything off. My attorney who knew I was holding on by a thread, riddled with debt with a dwindling bank account said to me in the most serious tone I’d ever heard from him “What are you going to do from here?”

I paused. And then I said: “I don’t know. But what I do know is, this can’t fail.
Young girls are watching. And if it fails, then it would mean the transition wasn’t worth it. My story will be a cautionary tale instead of someone’s survival guide.”

That was my truth. I didn’t need it to be perfect, but I needed it to matter. And I needed it to succeed. Because I wasn’t just building a business. I was trying to build a bridge for every woman like me who had ever left behind the known in search of something deeper, truer, and more aligned. xoNecole was launched to give women a voice and platform to share their personal stories. With little capital, we built something great, and I wanted to ensure that if I was going to hand over my brand to someone else, they would only make it greater.

He said, “What do we need to do to make this comfortable for you,” and I paused for a second while I thought about it and then listed them off one by one. I hung up not knowing what my fate would be, but he called back a few hours later and said, “Congratulations, they agreed to everything, we’ll send over the paperwork for you to sign.”

And I finally exhaled.
The congratulations felt good… but the real win?

The real win was finally being able to take a shower in peace. (I laugh as I write this but damnit life humbled the f*ck out of me in that season OKAY?)

Having my own space again. Walking into a quiet apartment where everything inside belonged to me. And knowing I survived a season that was designed to strip me, but it did not destroy me.

Everyone else just saw the congratulations on the other side:

The press release. The headlines. The “black girl magic” moment.

And don’t get me wrong, it was magical. But the real magic wasn’t in the deal.

The real magic was in the survival. The decision to keep going. The refusal to give up, even when everything in me wanted to tap out. The silent nights in that rented room where I reminded myself that shedding doesn’t mean failure, it means faith.

Because what I now know is this:

Growth won’t always come with a standing ovation. Sometimes it comes in the form of a Craigslist mattress, and a prayer you whisper at 2am. Sometimes it comes in choosing to believe in something before there’s any proof it will ever bloom.

That’s what that season taught me.

It taught me how to let go.
It taught me how to start over.
It taught me how to find peace with not having all the answers.
It taught me how to hold space for a dream even when I had nothing else left in my hands.

And most of all, it taught me that even when you’re shedding, you are still worthy.
Still becoming.

The irony is, I don’t miss any of the things I had to give up during that season.

So if you’re reading this and you’re in your own uncomfortable in-between…
If you’re shedding silently…
If your life doesn’t look like what you imagined right now…

Just know:
You’re not a failure.
You’re in the stretch.
And what feels like falling apart might actually be the sacred unfolding of a new life that is slowly coming together.

And this season, just like mine, won’t break you.
It will build you.

My hope in sharing my truth is that it makes space for yours. That you feel seen. And that you remember your transition isn’t the end of you, it’s the making of you.

It’s been a minute.

I’ve been sitting with this feeling lately: a soft, quiet realization that the life I’m living right now is... unfamiliar. And not in a bad way. But in a “wow, I’ve changed” kind of way.

I spend less time posting on social media these days, which means I’m not as plugged into the timelines, the trends, or the noise. And with that disconnection comes a little distance from people, from rhythms I used to dance in without thinking, and sometimes… from you.

When I first started this Substack in December 2020, I was sitting in the wreckage of a truth I had just spoken out loud.

A few days earlier, I had gotten off the phone with my company’s COO, and through tears, blurted out:

"I’m not happy."

It was the first time I had said it with my whole chest.

Three years after selling my company, I was still showing up, still performing, still being the founder everyone wanted me to be, but inside, I felt completely disconnected from my own life.

I had built something beautiful, but in the process, I had lost my sense of control. Over my career. My voice. My livelihood. And I lived with the anxiety every day of “What’s next for me?”

That space I was in?
It made me small in a world that wanted me to show up real big.

So I started writing here.
Not to fix anything. Not to impress anyone.
But just to hear myself again.

And now, over four years later, I’m coming back to this page as a woman who has lived her way into new questions. One who has slowly begun untangling her worth from her work. One who is no longer interested in being visible if it costs her her peace.

Because success used to mean something very different to me.

When I first started my career as a blogger, success looked like being photo’d with celebs every week, flying first class, staying in five-star hotels, being nominated for awards, and everyone knowing my name. That version of success? It was loud. Flashy. And honestly… exhausting.

These days, success looks quieter. Softer.

It looks like ease. Like purpose. Like peace in my body and clarity in my spirit.
It’s walking into a room and not needing to prove anything.
It’s creating something meaningful, even if no one claps right away.

I’ve changed.
And if I’m honest? Sometimes I wonder if that change has made me less interesting. Less relevant.
Less... relatable.

Because what do you write about when your life doesn’t feel curated anymore? When the glow-up is internal? When success looks like meeting your weekly book-reading quota, drinking your morning spirulina, and finally sleeping peaceful through the night?

To walk away from the brand I built from the ground up and start a new company that aligned with my why.

This newsletter was never just content. It was a conversation with the real me, the version I’d been too busy performing to meet.

Not as the woman trying to prove she’s still got it.
But as the one who has quietly come home to herself.

Back in December, while listening to a podcast between two women I randomly found while browsing Apple podcasts, my ears perked when one of them mentioned that listening to a guided hypnosis at night while she slept aided in her success. The other woman, a mom of four, expressed that she wished she could try it but with a husband and a newborn at home, she wouldn’t feel comfortable being in a trance state for a lengthy period of time.

I was fascinated.

As someone who has had experience with hypnosis through various hypnotherapy sessions, I believe it’s highly effective for reprogramming the subconscious mind and lifting any blocks that we may have could be holding us back. Hypnosis can be used for a variety of things including curing phobias, putting an end to a smoking habit, and even weight loss.

In 2012, I started Hypnotherapy sessions with Santa Monica-based hypnotherapist Sasha Carrion and I saw a huge boost in my confidence throughout the 2-3 years that we worked together. I started doing more speaking engagements, one-on-one interviews with celebrities, and my fame catapulted as a result of me being more comfortable with visibility. Outside of self-confidence work, I also became more comfortable in my femininity through multiple sessions with that specific focus. (My dating life in 2015 was POPPINGTON)

(Just a note…this hypnosis thing is something I’ve never mentioned ever during the span of my career …lol.)

At any rate, I could see how incorporating hypnosis as a daily practice could aid in increased productivity, curing procrastination, and even raising your self-confidence.

When I got home from the gym that night, I looked up a few hypnosis videos on youtube, and they were long —like 8 hours long, meant to play throughout the night while you are sleeping. Topics ranged from boosting energy, success, getting over a heartbreak, and even attracting abundance.

Since I was in a creative rut and hadn’t been inspired to write or create anything for months, I was willing to try ANYTHING.

Like the mom of four, I didn’t want to jump headfirst into 8 hours, so I found a 35-minute one that was focused on increasing productivity, and decided I would try it out every morning for a week to see what happened.

After the first morning, I hopped up out of bed ready to conquer the day!

Let’s just say, I’m going on week four of incorporating this into my morning routine and it’s now a staple. I listen to the recording at the top of every morning, and over the past month I’ve noticed:

1. An increase in the intensity of my morning workouts

2. An increase in my creative output (I’ve written 7 newsletters since December 23rd, averaging two a week. I’ve also recorded 3 solo podcast episodes)

3. An increase in my focus

Now mind you, this hypnosis thing may not be for everyone. I was first introduced to it in the ’90s when hypnotherapists would go on TV, hypnotized people, and have them barking like a dog for entertainment purposes. I never took it seriously, but after doing a ton of research on how the subconscious mind plays a huge role in the outcome of our relationships and success, and then actually experiencing getting over my fear of public speaking and other phobias by investing in hypnotherapy, I’m a bit more open when it comes to talking about it.

A few more productivity hacks

Morning workouts. There is just something about that endorphin release in the am that sets the tone for the rest of your day. The mornings I do not incorporate working out, whether it’s cardio or lifting, the day seems to control me versus me controlling the day.

Screen Time as a widget on your home screen. This allows you to easily see where you are spending the most time and where you may need to cut back. On my most productive day this year, I had only spent 22 minutes on Instagram and 3 hours and 37 minutes total on my phone by 7 pm.

Listening to Coffee House Music while working. It’s so soothing and creates a really relaxing ambiance at home.

Blocking out times on the calendar to actually be productive. Since I do have an assistant that schedules my meetings and my entire team has access to my calendar, I block out times so that I can actually get work done throughout the day, and so that meetings aren’t scheduled during those designated times. I also prefer not to take meetings before 11 am. I use the first hours of the morning to really pour into myself before having to deal with decision-making.

There are days where I will block out the entire workday in order to get a project done.

My morning starts around 6 am but I have it on my calendar from 8-11 am to give some wiggle room.

A Word About Progress…

I’ve decided to start a solo podcast as an audio component of this newsletter. I have my first episode “The Biggest Mistake I’ve Made In Business” coming later this week and the follow-up episode features famed YouTuber Maya Washington (aka Shameless Maya) who recently gave up her LA-lifestyle, sold everything she owned, and bought a home in Sweden with the love of her life. She’s now traveling and enjoying life without being held down by material things

We talked a lot about redefining happiness as two women who had both acquired all the things in life that we thought would make us fulfilled and there was a part of the episode where she asked me a question and I grew very emotional. I literally made a mental note to cut that part out of the podcast, then realize that me cutting that out would be very unauthentic to who I am. I also noticed while playing the episode back that my mic had a huge echo because I was talking into the wrong side of the mic (LOL!!!). The perfectionist in me wanted to record the whole darn episode over but I’m slowly realizing that seeking perfectionism is what holds us back from making progress.

Done is better than perfect.

Sometimes we get so caught up in endlessly tweaking projects that we never finish them.

These first few episodes, I recorded from my desk using a Rode mic and audacity software. No fancy sound engineer, producer or over-thinking. I’m super proud of myself for letting go of the desire for my first episode to sound like someone else’s 100th.

Lastly, and way off-topic, but single women… get you a step stool!

I almost killed myself climbing counters last year and so I bought this foldable one on Amazon.

Best purchase ever.

I’m back in your inbox after a very intense week of self-reflection, self-love and all the things…

There is a soul that has entered my space recently, right in the middle of my healing from a very tumultuous dating situation last year, and I’m unsure what to do with this person as I work through my triggers, and give myself the grace and space to embrace this ever-evolving person I am becoming.

Metamorphosis is gruesome AF.

The other week, I had a man hold and hug me in a way that I hadn’t been hugged before. It literally caused an explosion inside of me as my neglected inner child, …the one who never heard the words, “I love you” from the lips of her mother, and the one who didn’t receive hugs or words of affirmation from her parents because they were emotionally incapable of giving her the love she needed, came to the surface. It was an unexplainable, unfamiliar feeling for me and I wasn’t sure what to do with it.

The thing is, just because we weren’t exposed to that type of love when we were growing up, doesn’t mean we aren’t deserving of it. I have to constantly remind myself of that when self-sabotage comes knocking at my door. In this chapter of my life, I’m trying to call in a different kind of love than what I’ve been used to seeing or conditioned to receive and it requires me to be a bit braver in my vulnerability journey.

Still, if I can be very honest, I’m super unprepared mentally to be vulnerable with another human being during this particular season. **cues Debra Cox “How did you get here? Nobody’s supposed to be here.”

It’s uncomfortable.

And can we just talk about the art of dating while healing for a minute…

It’s excruciating.

There is a lot of unlearning.

A lot of checking yourself when it comes to fear and ego-based interactions.

Becoming aware of what parts of your personality and engagement with others are trauma-based.

Constantly colliding with your wounded inner child.

Feeling exposed as you unveil all the imperfect pieces.

I’d just rather not…

This weekend, I attempted to confide in a good friend about my decision to sit this season out, and she was not here for any of my “healing” excuses and shenanigans.

Heavy on the tough love.

Over the last three years, I put a pause on my personal life and dating as I worked on expanding my company after the acquisition, so all of this feels very new to me. During that time, I viewed relationships as a distraction, a loss of freedom, and a loss of self but now I’ve shifted my perspective. A relationship with the right person will only add value to whatever else I have going on in my life.

When I imagine myself at the end of my life and ask myself how I will evaluate my time here, there is only one question that concerns me: Did I love well?

Although I am a woman who has yet to experience what it’s like to be deeply in love, if I were to be very honest with myself, I desire to experience a requited love.

I desire a healthy love.

A healing love.

A soul-stirring love.

A love that doesn’t require me to shrink and allows me to show up in the fullness of who I am.

And no matter how much I’m out here telling these men, I’m only looking for friendship as a way to protect myself from getting disappointed, I do desire a serious relationship.

I deserve that and it will require me to navigate the world with an open heart to get it.

At any rate, if some of you are wondering why dating becomes a bit more difficult as you mature in adulthood, I was randomly listening to a random podcast on intimacy recently while working out, and a relationship coach made the following point:

“As a younger person, you allow yourself the experience of meeting someone, seeing where it takes you, and unfolding with the story while embracing the surprise of where this is going that you didn’t expect. When you are looking for a relationship as an adult, and you come with your expectations, you often torch the possibility of a story to unfold and to surprise you because you are sitting there with an inventory. And you are not allowing for the unknown to take you on a ride that you didn’t see coming.

Dating that involves a checklist is doomed.

It’s anti-romance.

It’s anti-story and stories are the way that we live our lives.

Feelings develop through shared experiences and a shared story together.”

Which leads me to ask, “Is it actually possible to date without a few expectations?

Galentine’s Weekend…

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, I was heavy on the self-love while romancing myself through candles, bubble baths, red wine, chocolates, and allowing myself to veer off of my structured daily routine. I was unproductive AF, but I needed the break.

As Toni Jones stated during xoNecole’s Own The Shift event a few Saturdays ago, as women we need to give ourselves permission to play, and for me, that means prioritizing my pleasure.

Galentine’s Day was a vibe this year with me and one of my girlfriends hitting up The Black Hair Experience exhibit in Atlanta on Saturday.

It was a beauty funhouse full of throwback hair magazines, hair products, scarfs, and hot combs which made for some nostalgic memories.

I wanted out.

Nowadays, my physical, mental, and emotional stability is driven by a really good morning and evening routine. I’ll get into my morning routine another time, but since we are entering a New Year, and most of us are committed to establishing better daily habits, I wanted to take a moment to give the evening routine it’s overdue flowers. It’s underrated.

A good evening routine helps you to unwind from the day, relax, destress, and prepare for a productive tomorrow.

It’s a perfect grand closer.

I love to treat my evening routine like the turn-down service at fancy hotels. Have you ever came back to your room late at night and the lights were dim, soft music was playing and the bed made with the linens peeled back and ready to be slept in?

I try to create the same atmosphere in my bedroom. An hour or two before it’s time for bed, I do the following:

• Dim the lights

• Put lavender essential oil in a diffuser (lavender oil helps for a better night’s sleep)

  

  My little diffuser that could. Aromatherapy has been a game changer for me.

• Play some soft music or soothing sounds. I also like the calm app for relaxing beach and nature sounds. Or another option is a wood-crackling candle (the sound of these also help me be productive during the day).

  ***After chatting with a friend today who was raving about it, I’ve just added a hanging Eucalyptus from Trader Joes to my evening shower to create a zen-like vibe in my bathroom.

It’s supposed to have many health benefits, including healing properties, helps clear congestion for a better night’s sleep, and is a huge destresser. My friend Cheryl says it makes her want to take 3 showers a day because of the smell and how she feels afterward, so we will see how it goes.

Also, I have a rule: No phone in the bed. It prevents hours of endless scrolling on social media or checking emails. Instead, I set my phone across the room, and I try to read a few chapters of a book right before I go to sleep so that it’s the last thing that enters my subconscious. I want a clear head when I wake up, not remnants of the previous night’s social media browsing lingering.

Bonus: Since I’ve been lifting again, I take a ZMA supplement before bed (Zinc, Magnesium, and B6). It helps with getting a good, uninterrupted night of sleep as well as muscle repair but my dreams are VIVID!

I chuckled while thinking to myself, “there is no way in the world that me, a single, black woman in Atlanta, is going to touch that topic,” but here we go…

In 2014, I was experiencing the peak of my gossip-blogging career and life was absolutely golden. I was living in a two-story double balcony condo in Beverly Hills that I was subleasing from one of the Jacksons, driving my dream car, my credit score was popping and I was hitting Equinox daily trying to kick start my fitness journey.

Looking back, I naively thought my status, being covered in magazines, making a ton of money, and tweeting out a few self-love quotes made me a high-value woman.

But there ain’t nothing that will test your perception of self than when you meet your ideal man.

One day, in the midst of hoping, praying, and wishing that I’d meet the Jay-z to my Beyonce, I received a call from a well-known relationship coach that was doubling as a Hollywood matchmaker. He had made connections between some very well-known couples and sometimes would call me to do reference checks on people to see what I knew about them. Although I rarely knew any of the people he inquired about personally, as a blogger I kept an archive of stories in my head. On this particular day, he inquired about a singer, and I told him that she was just spotted on a beach vacay with a ballplayer but I’d text her to confirm that this was indeed a thing.

Before he hung up, I jokingly said, “Don’t forget about me while you are hooking all these folks up….”

I left it at that.

Not less than a week later, he texted me, “Are you interested in going on a date with a guy who’s visiting LA? Setting it up now.”

I was like, damn! He works fast.

Now, this particular matchmaker is known to have a roster of professional athletes so I was relieved to find out that the guy he had in mind was actually a coach, older than me, and he had his ish together. But he was very tight-lipped on specifics outside of his first name and occupation.

This was about to be a full-on blind date…

I let him know that Hubby Potential had already sent me a text and I was immediately guided through what to say so I didn’t eff things up.

After a bit of chatting, I updated Mr. Matchmaker that plans were set and I was going to meet the guy the next day for breakfast.

And he was serious.

The next morning, I met Hubby Potential at a cafe, and he was everything I had envisioned my soulmate to be. An alpha male, handsome, god-fearing, confident, intelligent, well-dressed, well-versed, and motivational. Over bite-fulls of scrambled eggs, he carried the conversation and rarely broke eye-contact while expressing his views. I could tell the way he talked about coaching and mentorship that he was living in his purpose. I literally felt my heart flutter a little when he casually mentioned that he suggests that his players take women that they are serious about to breakfast on the first date, rather than dinner because dinner would more than likely lead to drinks, and drinks could lead elsewhere.

I barely ate while I soaked in every word that rolled off his tongue. Meanwhile, I felt myself growing more and more insecure by the minute.

Up until that point, my view of men was very narrow and based on the rappers, athletes, and entertainers that I blogged about daily. Most would eventually get caught up in cheating scandals, domestic violence incidents, or have “break babies” on their wives and weren’t the best example of great men. In my actual everyday life, due to the proximity rule, most of the men I knew were industry and so that’s what I’d end up dating, but never had I met a man of this type of stature before.

I was intimidated.

I felt hella flawed.

What would someone like him, see in a woman like me?

He was a man well-versed in politics, finances, the world, spirituality, and self-development, and I was only well-versed in the latest gossip.

Yes, I had acquired all these material things, success, money, a luxury car, and designer clothes, but they were only there to mask everything that I was lacking. I was using those things as a cover-up for my lack of confidence, low self-worth, and even lower self-esteem.

We were not in alignment.

After the date, I received a text from the matchmaker asking me how everything went, and I told him I wasn’t really sure I was a match for this guy. He assured me I was just going through ugly duckling syndrome (LOL…his words not mine), and that I need to get my sh*t together and stop being average. If I wanted better, I’d need to be better and date better.

And he was right. The entire situation shed light on areas where I needed major improvement and I humbly accepted that I needed to do some self-work before I found my Mr. Right. It was time to make some serious changes in my life because the way manifestation works:

You have to become the person you want to attract.

And the better you become, the better you attract.

Over the next few months, I moved from LA to Arizona to go through a personal transition that included closing down my gossip site, (the type of man I wanted wasn’t going to date a gossiper) and switching up my friends’ circle. I distanced myself from toxic people and negative situations and immersed myself in a new fitness and wellness lifestyle while also embarking on a healing journey that included therapy, chakra balancing, and energy healing.

And I read books, tons of them.

If you ever want to know what a person values, take a look at their bookshelf.

Meanwhile, Hubby Potential kept in touch and repositioned himself as a mentor in my life, occasionally sharing the books that he was reading, and videos that he thought would help me along on my self-discovery journey. I openly credited him and repeatedly thanked him for the woman I was becoming, and he constantly affirmed me.

Truth is, he saw me… before I could see me.

He constantly made sure I knew my worth and helped groom me into a woman of high-value.

Almost three years later, when it was time to leave Arizona and go back out into the world as this new, healed, self-aware version of myself, I attempted to reconnect with him but decided to do some “blogger” research before I did so. My heart dropped when I saw that six months prior, he had met his soulmate during his travels and had gotten married. Of course, I googled her too and could tell they were equally yoked.

I was happy for him!

But damn! That definitely sucked for me! He was the one that got away.

The thing is, people will roll their eyes at this whole high-value thing, but we only reach as far as our eyes can see. If you’ve never been exposed to someone of that caliber, of course, you are going to believe it’s not possible for you, or you’ll adopt an “I’ll take what I can get mentality.” And the term high-value has nothing to do with the amount of money he makes or the type of lifestyle he can provide. If he has certain values, all of that extra stuff will come automatically.

High-value says more about what a person values than it does their monetary worth.

This man allowed me to see that I didn’t have to settle for men whose communication style was limited to “WYD” texts or gifting, and whose self-worth was dependent on flashy cars, jewelry, $200 dates, and how many bags they could buy the women they were chasing.

I didn’t have to settle for men who didn’t know how to make time.

I didn’t have to settle for men who looked at women as accessories versus partners in their evolution.

Or men who were masking their trauma versus addressing their traumas.

When women have lists of qualities they are looking for in their ideal mate, sometimes people say they are asking for too much. I don’t believe we ask for enough. You want to make sure your values are in alignment. If I date a man that’s eating at McDonald’s 3 times a day, that tells me his values when it comes to his health isn’t exactly in alignment with mine as a woman who has a whole food diet and works out daily. I have a morning routine and structure to my day, so I’m naturally attracted to men that have structured mornings because that is an indication that he has intentional anchors that help set up his day. If a man is fit, that tells me he values being in shape and he is disciplined. That normally pours over into other areas of his life. If his bookshelf is stacked with self-development books, and he has mentors that is an indication to me that he has a relentless commitment to meeting a higher version of himself.

A high-value man is normally well-traveled and an avid reader. His friend circles are filled with men who are committed to leveling up emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, but also desire to be providers, good fathers, and amazing husbands.

(And you won’t find these types of men on the Internet arguing with others about whether the man or woman should pay for the first date…)

They know better so they are committed to doing better.

As far as women, I am a believer that we should work on becoming who we want to attract. If we want a partner that communicates without turning up, we have to learn to communicate in that manner. If we want a partner that’s a safe space and brings us peace, we have to learn to be a safe space and be their peace.

If we want a partner that is a leader, then we have to be willing to be led.

And if we want them to speak our love language, we have to be willing to learn to speak theirs.

High-value people have no room for selfishness or the unwillingness to compromise. They aren’t stuck in their ways or refuse to change. They use disagreements as an opportunity for growth and an opportunity to learn a perspective that is different than their own. They recognize that what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you.

As of 2021, I’m still patiently waiting for my soulmate but I have learned to be at peace with being single because as I’ve mentioned before, dating with a scarcity mindset will always lead to heartbreak. I am confident God is preparing my perfect match and that person will be in total alignment with not only who I am today, but who I am becoming.

As for Mr. Hubby Potential, before I cut off all communication, this is one of the last notes that he left me, and I’ll leave it with you:

“It is so important that women be extra careful about who they allow into their lives because women are multipliers. Whatever is given to her, she will multiply it and give it back to her partner, friends, and the world.

It all comes down to VALUE. So many women do not know their value so they begin to settle for below-market treatment. When you truly know your value and believe it, you only accept what you truly believe is fair and accurate treatment from the other person. You are a businesswoman, if I came to you and said I wanted to pay you $35 for ad space, you would tell me to get lost. Why? Because you truly know what the VALUE of your company/product is so nobody can shortchange you. Women have to start doing the same when it comes to love. Set your price, manage the customers who come into your store, and stand firm on what your value is because the minute you start accepting lower offers, your product will never be viewed the same. It’s not arrogance, but an awareness that says I know what I offer and what I bring to the table so the other person has to be willing to pay the price that is required.

In certain cultures, the man has to pay a dowry for his bride. 1) It’s a sign of respect, 2) It shows he recognized the value of the women he is marrying, 3) it shows the family he has the means to provide.

We don’t use that here but women have to be sure this man is aware of her value before investing herself in him. The wealthier the family, the higher the dowry. Why? The wealthy family has set a certain standard on who married their daughter. Tell any man you meet now, “I need you to be willing to pay the price to be in my life. And I can’t compromise my value.”

You will meet the right person at the right time. But the energy you put out will play a major role in who you attract. How you see yourself and how you see the world. You have to BELIEVE that the person you need is out there. Live every day as if it’s possible that that person does exist and they will come when you both are ready. Until that time, constantly work on becoming a better version of yourself. “

Simply thank you! A few days before Christmas I started a 52-week writing challenge with hopes that it would encourage me to post at least one blog a week. As a perfectionist who normally has to run her work past at least 3-5 people for feedback and edits before it reaches the Internet, this was a very vulnerable but necessary experiment for me. Your emails, texts, and comments on this newsletter as well as your shares on social media mean the world to me. It’s like that cheerleading squad I didn’t know I needed. Over the holiday break, a sweet spirit sent me the password to her Disney+ account with the words “You’re welcome.” It was my invitation to watch Pixar’s new movie Soul.

Now, animated movies really aren’t my thing, especially the way my attention span is set up. I’ve never watched a Pixar film before and I don’t think I’ve watched a Disney movie since Beauty & The Beast (1991). (I know, terrible!) But there was something about the plot and all the tweets raving about the film that captured my attention. Not to mention, it was the first time a Pixar film had a black lead. It stars Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner, a middle-school jazz teacher who accidentally dies after landing the gig of his life. Read that again: He dies after landing the job he has been dreaming about his entire life.

I won’t get into specifics, but the movie literally snatched what was left of my edges within the first 30 minutes. By the time the credits started rolling, I was re-evaluating my entire life, and I had to watch it a second time, this time with a notepad and pen.

Here are six profound quotes in the movie that literally came for us all, and how I interpreted them.

“Is all this living really worth dying for?”

We’d only be able to answer this question if we were truly living. Are you truly living?

“They say you are born to do something, but how do you figure out what that thing is? What if you pick up the wrong thing, or someone else’s thing and you are stuck.”

Is the thing you are doing right now what you were born to do or did you somehow get re-routed due to life obligations, fear, the wrong relationship, what your family wanted for you, or too many unsolicited opinions?

“He’s just criticizing [you] to cover up the pain of his own failed dreams…”

Your biggest critics will be the people who have never been where you are trying to go. Those are the people who will tell you what you can’t do because it’s too big of a reach for them. But newsflash: you have a different capacity. Your mindset is different. You move differently. You know that there is a world out there for you that’s bigger than the life you are currently living. If you let these people dictate what you do in life, you’ll live in the confinements of the walls they’ve built for themselves versus who you were called to be.

“Lost Souls are obsessed with something that disconnects them from life.”

Could that obsession be social media? Remember the days when we could actually choose who we followed and what we wanted to see on our timelines? Now, almost every single platform has implemented an algorithm so that they can control what you see (most of the time it isn’t the people you chose to follow), and they’ve put measures in place to keep you glued to your computer screens for as long as possible. The result is people losing themselves in endless scrolling, endless comparisons, endless watching others, and endless posting in an effort to keep up. Chile, the exhaustion of it all.

I remember I took my first vacation out of the country in 2010, a weekend getaway in Jamaica with one of my best friends. When I came back, my sister said to me, “Did you really have to post the entire time you were there?” I thought her comment was very rude at the time, but she had a point. 7 years later, I went on an amazing all-expense-paid trip to Thailand as part of a deal with an airline. We stayed in a $2k a night luxury pool villa in Phuket complete with cooking classes, spa visits, and morning yoga, and we captured some of the most beautiful vacation photos I’ve taken in my life. Looking back, a lot of my days were filled with making sure we got the right shots, and I came back with just that, a lot of beautiful pics, and very few memories.

Now, when I go on vacation, I have to ask myself, are you allowing moments to organically happen, or are you forcing and pausing moments for the sake of capturing content that you can later post on your social channels? If every vacation or gathering requires a shot list, you ain’t living!

“I’ve been waiting on this day my entire life, I thought it would feel different….”

Joe standing outside that club after a stellar performance wondering why success was hitting different than what he’d imagined is all of us at some point. There is nothing like manifesting, huge, incredible earth-shattering things into our lives. But what happens when you get them, and still feel empty and unfulfilled? You got your dream career, now what? You got the man of your dreams, now what?

I’ll tell you a secret here: This year, I found myself on a call with the COO of my company uncontrollably sobbing. “I’m not happy!” I blurted out. “And I don’t know what it will take for me to get to happy.” After a deafening awkward pause on the other end, I continued, “I feel guilty and a lot of shame that I feel this way. I’ve dreamed of this moment all of my life. I manifested this. But it feels different than what I thought it should.” That revelation was a hard pill for me to swallow, especially with young women looking up to me and wanting to follow my path.

It wasn’t my COO’s fault that I wasn’t happy or anyone’s fault in my company. I had the best business acquisition that anyone could ever ask for. One that afforded me a lot of freedom in brand direction and I’m working under people who have amazing clout in the industry. But with the announcement of my acquisition came the activation of my imposter syndrome, the need for perfection, the need to constantly prove that I was worthy of something so major happening in my life, and in the midst of that, life has felt rather chaotic. I’ve found myself on a huge hamster wheel year after year, as I tried to mold myself into and keep up with what I felt the founder of a media empire should be. I created this scenario in my life, no one else did and there is nothing he or anyone else on my team could do to make me happy. I am in control of the wheel and my happiness lies within me.

This leads me to the last and final profound line I picked up from the film…

“Your purpose and your spark are different. Your purpose is found in how you serve others, but your spark is living. It’s your passion. “

This line made me realize that the key to your happiness doesn’t always lie in finding and living out your purpose. It isn’t in some huge publicized deal, awards, or a large following. Your happiness is in the spark. What makes you feel alive. What makes you excited to get out of bed every morning.

In my particular case, in the midst of me building my brand, leading a team, creating brand extensions, and things that would make the company profitable, I lost my spark.

Unlike the character 22, who spent the entire movie trying to find her spark, I know what my spark is. I feel that spark when I’m writing and creating from my most vulnerable and authentic place. I’ve been writing since I was 16, and my mom used to find half-written novels hidden in boxes in the back of my closet. It’s no coincidence that I became a blogger.

Sometimes to find your spark again you have to channel your inner child. You have to channel who you were before the world told you who you should be.

I’m finding my spark again, and I challenge you in the New Year to find yours.

As he entertained me with colorful war stories, he mentioned that as a former soldier he was required to leave his family for extended periods of time before a huge mission. They called this period isolation for preparation. During this time, he’d prepare mentally and physically for the huge task ahead because just one mistake could cost a ton of lives.

I sat with this for a minute and thought about how it had applied to my own life.

In 2014, as I was preparing to transition out of my career as a gossip blogger, I moved to Arizona to go through a period of isolation. I knew the only way that I would be able to start my new life, was to leave everything that I had ever known and I would have to separate myself from the people who had boxed me into an idea that I had outgrown. It literally allowed me to be introduced to a newer, more evolved version of myself, and I never felt so free.

That isolation period gave me the clarity I needed to walk away from my celebrity gossip site, and I went on to launch a whole new brand centered around empowerment, feminine wellness, and career elevation which was more in line with the woman I wanted to be.

In 2018, while on the road to obtaining my pro card as an IFBB bikini athlete, I went through another period of isolation. This time, I isolated myself from a friend’s circle who spent weekends drinking and turned up on Sundays for Brunch. I traded liquor-filled industry events, and let’s meet for coffee dates with frequent visits to the gym and grocery store all because I knew the discipline required to obtain a winning physique had no room for slip-ups. Instead of spending long hours on social media, or chatting it up on the phone with friends, I fed my mind audiobooks and youtube motivational videos to train my mindset to be that of a champion. And I visualized that win every single day. As a result, I obtained my pro card within 3 months of my isolation period.

Another goal crossed off the list.

Isolation isn’t just for preparation, it’s for elevation.

I am reminded of this as we come to the close of a year that forced many of us into involuntary isolation. Those first few months of lock-down felt incredibly lonely, but after going through all the motions, I stopped and asked myself, “What is God trying to teach me in this season?”

Over the past two years, I’ve been re-routed time and time again by simply asking far too many people for their opinions on ideas I had or things I really wanted to do. And those varied opinions led me down a dark hole of unfinished work and shoulda coulda wouldas. Constantly asking for other’s thoughts and opinions on things I hadn’t even started meant that I didn’t trust my gut. I was asking for permission to do some of the work HE called me to do.

This need for validation led me to spectator mode, cheering from the sidelines for people whose action on their dreams led to major life wins. Meanwhile, I became so distracted by staying busy in projects that bogged me down versus served me, that I didn’t realize I had transitioned into auto-pilot mode and lost command of the wheel.

The wheel that was the life I desired to live, which included filling my days with things that I was incredibly passionate about.

Since I refused to do frequent self check-ins to see if I was truly happy, still in alignment, and on the right path, my GPS lead me to a destination I never chose.

In moments such as this, when we feel redirected, that is when we need to spend the most time with ourselves. It is during these times, isolation is absolutely necessary.

If you are reading this, the odds are you are have gone through something similar. There’s a major shift happening in your life, and everything is changing. The isolation periods that happened for many of us who live alone in 2020 was meant for us to face the weakest parts of ourselves. The things in our lives that weren’t working. The things that needed changing.

It also made us realize the things that really set our souls on fire.

It helped us face our true selves.

In the poem, The Invitation, there is a line that says:

I want to know
if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like
the company you keep
in the empty moments.

I’ve learned to enjoy my clarity in these empty, quiet moments filled with solitude. Those moments when my inner voice is the loudest because it doesn’t have to compete with that of others. It doesn’t have to compete with my self-doubt or fear.

My inner voice runs this sh*t when she’s in an environment that allows her to shine.

I send this note to you as a reminder to take the time to lean into your quiet moments this holiday season.

Your inner voice has been waiting for its time to speak.

Mine told me that it’s time I get back to my essence: writing.

A Word From The Founder

Hi I’m Necole!

Most known for my rise to Internet stardom in 2008 after launching the celebrity gossip blog NecoleBitchie.com. And also most known for walking away from that same blog at the height of its success in 2015, to launch a women’s lifestyle and empowerment brand.

Throughout the bulk of my career as a blogger, I’ve been covered in many magazines, won numerous awards, and even name-dropped in songs by some of my favorite rappers. I’ve had dinner with the Kardashians, had the opportunity to fly around the world as part of the 777 tour with Rihanna, and rubbed shoulders with industry legends like Diddy, Floyd Mayweather, and even my idol Oprah! I’ve also been invited to the White House (when they were letting folks that look like me swag surf on the lawn.)

I know what it’s like to live the life of your dreams! (or what I thought…)

I’ve seen some really high moments in my career, but I’ve also been through some incredibly low moments!

I know what it’s like to feel really rich and to be really broke.

I know what it’s like to go from sleeping on couches, to first-class flights and 5-star hotel rooms, back to almost sleeping on couches again.

I know what it’s like to be surrounded by a lot of people, and feel really alone.

I know what it’s like to be well-known, but not really know yourself.

I know what it’s like to succeed, and I know what it’s like to feel as though you’ve failed.

I’ve learned a lot of life lessons, and I could either put them in a book… or I could put them in a newsletter.

For now, I’m putting them in a newsletter.

The Hello Necole newsletter was launched out of a need to reclaim my voice online and to take ownership of my narrative as an entrepreneur.

Although there are parts of my life that were very glamourous, there were also parts of my life that I’m not so proud of but they make for the best lessons. I want to use this space to share the highs and lows, as well as the personal transformation I had to go through to become the woman I am today.

What To Expect

You’ll get a few stories from my blogging heyday, some life lessons, some productivity hacks, wellness tips, and a whole lot of insight on the highs and lows of running a media brand.

Every now and then, I’ll drop a podcast/audio blog or interview with some of my favorite people who are currently living their dreams after taking a huge bet on themselves, but the goal here is to give the people what they want without overthinking it too much (because the way my perfectionism is set up…)
